The Ban On Plastic Straws

As you may have read in the news recently, the UK is looking at the prospect of banning plastic straws from as early as next year.

Plastic straws are incredibly damaging to the environment, there are around 8.5 BILLION plastic straws thrown away EVERY year and that is just the UK. Just one plastic straw can take 500 years to decompose. When you see figures like that you can see why this really needs tackling and why changes need to be made now.

There are many alternatives to plastics straws, including, paper, metal and bamboo (something that here at Green Monkey we are hoping to try out ourselves soon) we have already seen the benefits of using a bamboo toothbrush so we hope the same alternative will work for straws.

There are many companies that have also reduced or stopped the use of plastic straws within their companies, Weatherspoon’s will now only use biodegradable paper straws, and there are many others companies that also taking this stance.

Other ideas have been to charge 5p to use a plastic straw, when this was introduced with the plastic bags, this led to nine million fewer bags being distributed.

We can all as individuals though make a difference indivudally by cutting our single use plastic from our everyday lives.
